225TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF A. S. PUSHKIN
LINGUISTIC STUDIES
Aim. To identify the reflection of A. S. Pushkin’s attitude to the characters of the poem “Poltava” in the syntactic structure of the text.
Methodology. The linguistic material from the poem “Poltava” was collected and analyzed using the targeted sampling method. Using the structural and semantic research method, the interaction of the syntactic construction of the poem and its content was revealed.
Results. It is established that A. S. Pushkin’s poem “Poltava” is based on the principle of opposition, which forms the integrity and unity of Pushkin’s new poetics and is reflected in the use of syntactic constructions. The juxtaposition of the images of Mary as the embodiment of love and fidelity and Hetman Mazepa as the personification of lies and betrayal is realized through the use of non-verbal and verbal sentences, constructions of expressive syntax.
Research implications. The results obtained complement the theory of the functioning of syntactic units in a poetic text and information about Pushkin’s idiosyncrasies.
Aim. To study the key means of creating and evaluating the image of Grigory Ivanovich Muromsky, a Russian Anglomaniac gentleman, in the text of A. S. Pushkin's novel “The Peasant Lady”.
Methodology. Based on a targeted sampling of the units from the text of the story that helped the author create the image of Ivan Grigoryevich Muromsky, a range of key tools acting as predicates and characterizing the character as an Anglomaniac and a Russian gentleman was determined. The methods of analysis used are the description of the semantics of resources with the involvement of lexicographic sources, interpretation, elements of component analysis, functional and semantic method.
Results. Analysis of the means of predication, forms and ways of expressing the predicate, the use of opportunities to attribute additional predicative features using second predication made it possible to show that A. S. Pushkin sought to create a dynamic image of a character with a Russian basis of character, the development of which is complicated by a passion for the achievements of the British economy as a current trend of the time, a change in the cultural paradigm in the Russian nobility’s life. It is confirmed that anglomania, which seemed to be an oddity, with a slight irony appearing in the nature of connotations, is presented by the author with a certain degree of affection as an original feature of the image of the Russian landowner Muromsky.
Research implications. The study confirms the importance of referring to the text of A. S. Pushkin’s novella “The Peasant Lady” when getting acquainted with the constants and variables of Russian culture peculiar to the life of the nobility of the 19th century; the results can be used in studying the work of A. S. Pushkin and the features of the images of the text of the novella using the long-read method relevant in the digital era.
Aim. To examine the semantic and stylistic unity in the semantic structure of the word gaze in the context of Pushkin’s poetic space.
Methodology. The lexeme gaze is subjected to linguistic analysis, changes in the lexical and semantic structure of this word at different stages of the development of the Russian language are revealed. The systematic description of the realization of the word gaze in lyrical works proves that Pushkin changes the semantic structure of the polysemant, expanding the denotative meaning at the expense of the connotative ones.
Results. The corpus of contexts with the linguistic unit gaze is revealed, syntagmatic and paradigmatic connections are established. The main dominants that the author used in the context of revealing the concept of gaze as a fragment of the emotional picture of the world are identified.
Research implications. The study of this material has shown that elements of lexical and stylistic layers interact and influence each other in the same language space. The practical significance of the research is determined by the possibility of applying its materials and conclusions in teaching the stylistics of the Russian language, the language of fiction.
LITERARY STUDIES
Aim. To highlight the presence of the image of A. S. Pushkin in the literary process of the 1920–1930s, to identify original assessments of the cultural, historical, religious and moral impact of Pushkin’s works and his personality on the descendants of the 20th century living in the Soviet Union and Russia abroad.
Methodology. The work examines some publications of the first post-revolutionary years, in particular the new scientific edition of Pushkin’s “Diary” for 1833–1835, undertaken in 1923, and provides some interpretations of Pushkin by selected poets: A. A. Blok, N. S. Gumilyov, V. A. Sumbatov, philosophers, historians and philologists: P. B. Struve, I. A. Ilyin, D. P. Svyatopolk-Mirsky, E. F. Shmurlo. To highlight the problem, individual pages of publications are used, the memoir prose of I. V. Odoevtseva, the books by M. I. Tsvetaeva “My Pushkin”, V. V. Veresaev’s “Pushkin in Life” are mentioned.
Results. The selected materials show how important and deep Pushkin’s influence was on the descendants of the twentieth century, who survived the collapse of the Russian state and elected Pushkin as the founder of the creation of a unified Russian culture, an ally in the struggle for national dignity, freedom of creative expression, and the unification of cultures of different countries and peoples. Pushkin was a connecting center uniting science, philosophy, poetry and the literary process, which has broken up and continues to break up into several branches and links due to the division into Soviet, emigrant literature, historiography, theology, literary studies, folklore studies...
Research implications. The article may be in demand for comprehending new facets of Pushkin’s influence on Russian literature a century after his lifetime activity; it is aimed at strengthening interest in the history of Pushkin studies, methodological issues of the humanities, and the education of an aesthetically and spiritually oriented personality.
Aim. To analyze the specifics of organizing a creative dialogue with the reader in the structure of A. S. Pushkin’s unfinished prose in the aspect of genetic connections with the traditions of the rococo novel, to establish structural units of Pushkin’s text associated with the rocaille novel, to reveal the features of expressing the author’s view of literature as a living, developing system that requires special erudition and responsiveness from the reader.
Methodology. The analysis proposed in the article is based on the principles of historical-genetic and comparative-typological analysis of a literary work. Characterization of the main elements of the text, comparable to the Rococo novel as a literary, polemical and metatextual phenomenon, is carried out using elements of the structural-semiotic method, as well as elements of cultural semiotics.
Results. The analysis undertaken made it possible to identify literary motifs in Pushkin’s unfinished works – “Arap of Peter the Great”, “Novel in Letters”, “Roslavlev”, as well as to consider the significance for the design of Pushkin’s historical and literary concept, to identify the features of its substantive and formal aspects, to establish genetic sources of the similar “games with the reader” associated with the rocaille traditions of Western Europe, as well as the work of N. M. Karamzin, primarily with his book “Letters of a Russian Traveller”.
Research implications. The results of the study can be the basis for considering the historical and literary concept of Pushkin as a whole, as well as studying the concept of literary play, the motive of the hero-reader in a literary work, as well as the deep processes of transformation occurring in the novel at the turn of the 18th – 19th centuries.
Aim. To identify the importance of Italian culture for Pushkin’s personality.
Methodology. The material of the article was the entire corpus of Pushkin’s literary heritage – his lyrics, poems, dramatic works, autobiographical prose and letters. The research is based on the continuous sampling method, biographical, cultural-historical, comparative-historical, as well as historical-functional approaches that allow us to holistically present the features of Pushkin’s “Italian text”.
Results. The article reveals the substantive aspects of Pushkin’s “Italian text”, which are associated with the concepts of “beauty”, “freedom”, “Italian opera”. The degree of Pushkin’s knowledge of the Italian language is systematically presented, the details of his acquaintance with Italian culture are revealed. The hypothesis is put forward that Pushkin outlines the ways of development of Russian literature by analogy with the literature of Italy. Proposals on the thematic division of Pushkin’s “Italian locus text” are formulated.
Research implications. The theoretical significance of the study is related to the systematic representation of the Italian theme in Pushkin’s work and the in-depth development of the problem of “locus text” in Russian literature
Aim. To reveal the influence of Pushkin’s poem “The Fountain of Bakhchisarai” on Lermontov’s artistic world, on his ideas about the female ideal and the essence of love.
Methodology. The object of the study is Lermontov’s reception of Pushkin’s poem “The Fountain of Bakhchisarai” in the aspect of the artistic implementation of its plot, imagery, and spiritual content. Through the analysis of such Lermontov’s works as “The Georgian Song”, “Two Slaves”, the poetic message “On secular chains ...”, a holistic study of Lermontov’s dynamic perception of Pushkin’s poem is given. The methodology of the work is connected with the use of biographical, cultural-historical, comparative-historical, aesthetic approaches, which make it possible to identify the creative roll calls of Pushkin and Lermontov, to clarify the features of a personal perception and the specifics of the artistic method of the two poets.
Results. Lermontov’s artistic interpretation of Pushkin’s poem “The Fountain of Bakhchisarai” is twostage. If at an early stage of his work he perceives and implements in his poetry its plot and the most striking features of the depicted characters, then in his mature work “The Fountain of Bakhchisarai” receives an ontological understanding associated with the understanding of female beauty and the phenomenon of love as a spiritual force that determines the human condition and the fate of history. The poem dedicated to M. A. Shcherbatova “On secular chains…” is the most significant in the assimilation of the Pushkin’s tradition. The female image in Lermontov’s poem is a synthesis of Pushkin’s artistic experience, perceived by Lermontov in the trust of the constant memory of his text, and his personal experience of perceiving the spiritual principle of female beauty.
Research implications. The theoretical significance of the study relates to the clarification of the peculiarities of the refraction of the Pushkin’s tradition in Lermontov’s work and the concretization of the meaning of the Pushkin’s text in the formation of Lermontov’s worldview.
Aim. The purpose is to identify to what extent the manuscript materials stored in the Department of Manuscripts of the Russian State Library of Economics (F. 10) reflect the content of the “Anthropological sketch” about A. S. Pushkin by D. N. Anuchin.
Methodology. Paleographic, archaeographic and descriptive methods were used in the study of hand[1]written materials. Historical-philological, comparative and biographical methods were used to analyze the text of the sources.
Results. It is concluded that the handwritten materials of D. N. Anuchin’s personal fund are of different genres and correspond to the goal set by D. N. Anuchin here – to find out what are the features of the physical and mental personality type, hereditary traits and individual characteristics of the great Russian poet. The planned essay on the peculiarities of the mental type of A. S. Pushkin was not included in the publication but was preserved in draft handwritten materials. D. N. Anuchin’s “Anthropological Sketch” about A. S. Pushkin is of great importance for literary studies.
Research implications. The material on D. N. Anuchin’s archival Pushkin studies is summarized, and suggestions are formulated that the scientist conducted anthropo- and psychogenetic studies of the personality of A. S. Pushkin even before the official emergence of these scientific disciplines.
Aim. To characterize the Caucasian period of A. S. Pushkin’s work, to point out the importance of the theme of Dagestan in his poetry.
Methodology. The methods of observation, analysis, biographical and conceptual methods were used.
Results. The study proves that Pushkin and the Caucasus is a special topic that worries not only researchers of Pushkin’s work, but also researchers of the history of the Caucasus, the history of relations between Russia and the Caucasus in the 19th century. It is shown that the period of the Caucasian War had a crucial significance both for the Caucasus and for Russia itself: new Russian-Caucasian ties are emerging, and the already existing ones are strengthening. In the crucible of war, two cultures collide, two worldviews that enrich each other.
Research Implications. The study confirms the importance of the Caucasian period in A. S. Pushkin’s works, arguments are given in favor of the fact that the Caucasus becomes a special place where the spirit of freedom for the exiled Decembrists dwells, a place where two cultures, two civilizations, two mentalities collide, which is reflected in the works of Russian writers of the late XIX century.
Aim. To reconstruct the dynamics of Pushkin’s perception and artistic reproduction of the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Methodology. The aesthetic function of the religious symbol and its role in the formation of the axiological system of Pushkin's late lyrics are established. The transformation of the medieval genre of visions as a source of poetic inspiration is considered. The sophological perspective of love poetry is revealed, which later formed the artistic mythology of Eternal Femininity. With the help of generative and hermeneutic analysis of Pushkin’s poems “Madonna” (1830), “There lived a poor knight…” (1829), “To*** (“I remember a wonderful moment…”)” (1825), the semantic layers of imagery linking Russian and European poetry about love in a religious and sophistic context are revealed.
Results. It is concluded that in a number of Pushkin’s poems there are not only allusions to European art, but also a deep experience of spiritual lyrical and mystical experience of Beauty, Love, and Femininity.
Research implications. The results of the study expand and complement the understanding of cultural sources, context and possibilities of interpretation of classical poems by A.S.Pushkin in the system of discourse and the phenomenon of increment of meanings.
