From "Life, Poetry, and Thoughts of Joseph Delorme" to "The Sensual Man": the Nature of Autobiographical Prose Sh. Sainte-Beuve

Abstract

Basing on the works of "Life, poems and thoughts of Joseph Delorme" and "The sensual man" the article addresses the nature of autobiographical prose of Sh. Sainte-Beuve. Particular attention is paid to the author's intention, the mindset of representation of his life experience through the artistic means. Traceable connection between the two works helps to identify as in line with the mainstream romantic aesthetics the type of character is formed that reflects the author's consciousness. The article compares the main characters in the studied works, reveals their connection to the characters of the French novel of the 19th century, as well as their relationship to the romantic myth of "evil age."
