CHARLES E. MAY'S CRITICAL VIEW ON CHEKHOV'S WORKS AND THE SHORT STORY GENRE OF THE 20TH CENTURY

Abstract

The article examines the critical essay «Chekhov and the Modern Short Story» by Charles E. May, the honourable Emeritus Professor at California State University, Long Beach. Charles E. May discusses the noticeable influence of the Russian classical writer on a popular in the West literary genre of short story. The critic explores Chekhov's ability to dispense with a striking incident, his impressionism, and his freedom from the literary conventions of the highly plotted and formalized story. That, according to Charles E. May, marked the birth of a new or «modern» kind of short fiction that combined the specific detail of realism with the poetic lyricism of romanticism.
