Abstract

Aim. To analyze the semantics and functions of negative utterance in S. A. Yesenin’s poetry and justify denial as one of the features of the idiosyncrasy of the poet’s literary heritage.

Methodology. The following methods were used in the research: component analysis of the semantics of negation, interpretation of linguistic facts within the framework of the structural-semantic and logical-semantic directions, linguistic-statistical method. The views of researchers on the categorical essence of denial are summarized.

Results. According to the results of the study, the authors specified the connotations of statements with explicit and implicit negation in the poetic work of S. A. Yesenin. Negation as a linguistic-aesthetic category is revealed as a special artistic tool and feature of S. A. Yesenin’s idiosyncrasy. The theoretical approaches to understanding the category of negation and classification of negative sentences in the Russian language are summarized.

Research implications. The results of the study make it possible to expand scientific ideas about the semantics of negation by specifying the system of connotations of a negative statement based on the material of poetic texts. The study of the semantics of negation in S. Yesenin’s poetry opens new perspectives in the study of poetic language and its features. The results and conclusions obtained can be used in the practice of teaching Russian at school when studying ways of negation, in particular, the particles “not” and “neither”, their combined and separate spelling with different parts of speech.
