Abstract

Aim. To identify the artistic specificity of the verbal portrait poetics in A. Green's stories from 1900 to 1910.

Methodology. The evolution of verbal portrait in Green's early prose is traced: from the general social characteristics to the individual psychological ones, the attention is particularly focused on the dynamic properties of portraits, reflecting momentary changes in a person’s condition. The research relies on descriptive and hermeneutical methods.

Results. It is concluded that Green already declared himself as a master of verbal portrait in his early work. A variety of vocabulary, tropes, coloristic and phonological means were used for the expressiveness of the portrait; the principles of mirroring are used as a tool for self-knowledge and self-analysis of the character; subjective contemplation and perception are productive in increasing the level of psychologization; the functionality of the a priori portrait in the further development of events is also active.

Research implications. The results of the research can be used in lectures on the history of Russian literature of the 20th century and in special courses on Green’s work.
