CONCEPTUALIZATION OF PERCEPTUAL SEMANTICS IN LEGAL VOCABULARY

https://doi.org/10.18384/2949-5008-2023-4-34-45

Abstract

Aim. To review the main patterns of realization and development of the meanings of perceptual verbs and their derivatives in legal speech in the aspect of general directions of representation of perceptual semantics and the main characteristics of professionally labeled vocabulary.

Methodology. Perception verbs and their derivatives as universal linguistic means of forming perceptual semantics are considered in the work from the viewpoint of the perceptual meanings systemic properties influence on their secondary conceptualization in the legal sphere. System-linguistic, functional, and cognitive research methods are used: the systematic categorization of perceptual processes in language and the correlation of this consistency with the patterns of functioning of the perception vocabulary in the social sphere, including professionally oriented social activities, are characterized.

Results. The conceptualization patterns of perceptual semantics in professional legal speech are revealed. Firstly, conceptualization is determined by the form and the nature of the perceptual process. Thus, the analyzed concepts of the professional sphere are formed based on the semantics of purposeful visual and auditory perception (look, listen). Secondly, the lexical consistency of the perceptual semantics conceptualization in legal speech is determined by the formation of two thematic groups of vocabulary: 1) designations of professional actions and functions, including the secondary meanings of the perceptual verbs themselves (to listen to the case) and the nouns derived from them (supervision, inspection, hearing); 2) names of persons according to professional actions / functions (supervisor, caretaker) and legal status (witness, eyewitness).

Research implications. The research develops the scientific ideas about the dynamics of the perceptual semantics development and enriching the arsenal of methods and approaches to the study of professional legal speech.
