Abstract
Aim. To analyze of the features of semantics and functioning of linguistic units out of the corner of the eye and out of the corner of the ear and comparison of the results of this analysis with scientific and common ideas about peripheral visual and auditory perception.
Methodology. The semantics, compatibility and use of expressions (to see) out of the corner of the eye, (to hear) out of the corner of the ear are analyzed. In the course of the study, the methods of component, collocation, contextual analysis were applied.
Results. The semantic specificity and trends in the use of each of these expressions are revealed, the conclusion is made about the weakness of the traditional assessment of peripheral visual and auditory perception as merely superficial and accidental.
Research implications. The work contributes to the linguistic study of perception processes, its results can be considered in research on cognitive semantics and construction grammar.
