The dynamics of toponyms and microtoponyms (based on the toponyms of Smolensk region)

Abstract

The article gives the results of
the dynamic process in the toponymy of Smolensk
region in the XVII-XVIII centuries. Long
descriptive constructions including the name
of the object and the name (the nickname) of the
owner were typical at the early stages of toponymy
development. Such descriptive constructions
are lost in due course in accordance with
the development of the toponymic system.
