Peter Grimes, or some strokes to the Russian portrait of the English character

Abstract

In the poem «The Borough»
(1810) the English poet George Crabbe created
a portrait of the fisherman Peter Grimes, one of
the most gloomy characters of the seaside halfdeserted
towns, who had such negative features
as malice, rebelliousness, ability to lay hands
on his father, disrespect for the Bible since his
childhood. Rare perspicacity, witticism and
power in the description of the persons nature
made Crabbe a genuine master of the literary
portrait. The translation of the fragment about
Peter Grimes from Crabbes «The Borough» was
created by Min with professionalism typical for
him, with heed to literary peculiarities of the
English original, that resulted in almost full
subordination of the translation to the English
authors intention.
