The èthnógraphy of "Poschehonje", the family lands of Saltykov-Shchedrin
Abstract
The article examines the ethnographical
peculiarities of ancestral estate of M.
Saltykov-Schedrin, in centre of which stayed
Spas-Ugol village. The importance of the writer's
generation for the territory formation has
been traced since 1717. The original collection
of toponymic legends as well as folk stories, recorded
in Spas-Ugol village, the centre of the
Saltykovs' patrimony, and other neighboring
settlements during the folk and area studies in
1988 and 1992, is described partially. It is also
specially noted the way M. Saltykov-Schedrin
was executing the long-term plan of Imperial
Geographical Society, preparing the collection
of ethnographical description of Russia.
